POSITION DESCRIPTION

Part-Time Computer Science Instructor

University of California, Riverside – Extension and University of California, Davis C-STEM

UCR Extension is the continuing and professional education division of the University of California, Riverside offering over 80 programs and certificates to domestic and international students. UC Davis C-STEM is a UC Approved Educational Preparation Program for Undergraduate Admission for both K-12 and community college students to all University of California campuses. The  C-STEM Math-ICT Curriculum, including 20 UCOP Approved A-G Courses, provides K-12 students with 13 years of integrated learning of math and computer science. UCR Extension and UC Davis C-STEM are offering computer science courses for K-12 educators through a new partnership model. The joint UC Davis and UC Riverside Computer Science Supplementary Teaching Credential Authorization Program will meet the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) requirements.

UCR Extension and UC Davis C-STEM are seeking experienced professionals to join the UCR Extension instructional team as part-time instructors for adult learners. Successful candidates of this continuous recruitment will be eligible to teach courses as they are scheduled during the year for our Introductory Supplementary Authorization in Computer Science Education and Specific Supplementary Authorization in Computer Science Education certificates. These courses will prepare students with fundamental CS knowledge and pedagogy to teach any K-12 standards-compliant computer science curriculum.

  1. Introduction to Teaching Computer Science
  2. Programming and Integration of CS into STEAM Teaching
  3. Development of Integrated CS and STEAM Curriculum with Physical Computing
  4. Computer Programming in C
  5. Data Structures and Software Design Complete four courses to earn an Introductory Authorization and teach in grades 9 and below, or add the fifth course to earn a Specific Authorization to teach up through grade 12. The first course with 3 credit units has 30 instruction hours and the remaining four courses have 4 credit units each with 40 instruction hours. Through the UC Davis C-STEM Program, these courses are offered in-person in different regions in California, on-site in schools and districts, and in a distance-learning format.

Responsibilities:
• Provide instruction in-person or online in accordance with the established instructional agreement, curriculum, and class schedule provided by UCD C-STEM and UCR Extension.
• Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students, and clearly outline the grading policies to the course.
• Participate in scheduled orientations, meetings, and mandatory training programs by established deadlines of UCR and UCD C-STEM.
• Maintain timely and accurate academic records within the learning management system and submit timely and accurate documentation as outlined in the instructional agreement.
• Provide professional development for K-12 teachers based on the C-STEM curriculum
• Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct.

Minimum Requirements:
• Must have a computer/laptop and access to the internet.
• Ability to provide instruction online and in-person.
• Advanced degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Five years of related work experience.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Hold an active and clear California K-12 teaching credential.
• Experience working with K-12 public school teachers.
• Experience with Canvas learning platform.
• Experience teaching adult learners.
• Experience with curriculum development and course design.
• Ability to teach a wide range of courses in the field of expertise.
• Ability to teach courses in person in Southern California and/or in Northern California at UC and school district partner locations across the state of California.
• Ability to travel
